But I’m not married yet, you say. That may be true! But you can, and should be, still doing him good.

“She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.” Prov 31:12

Notice the last part of that verse “…all the days of her life.” This doesn’t just mean after she’s married! This includes her childhood. For you and I, that means the here and now.

How are ways that we can do our husbands good, now? Most of us always think automatically of the purity issue. That is true – remaining pure is a big part of doing our husbands good now, but there’s a lot more that we can add. Let’s take a look the rest of Proverbs 31 for some answers.

“The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.” vs. 11

Trust. Our Husbands will need to trust in us. We can be cultivating a trustworthy character now. Besides, half of being trustworthy is having the reputation of trustworthiness. Trustworthiness isn’t something that will show up at the door with our suitor.

“She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.” vs. 13

Diligence and a willingness to work. Understanding what our role is as a woman is vital to understanding this point. As woman, we are the completer of the man – we are the helper. Helping is hard work! This means that we must lay aside our dreams to fulfill another’s and, unfortunately, women in general struggle with this. We must be striving to be ladies who, not only are helpers, but willing, cheerful helpers in our family. It is often said that the mother sets the tone in the home, and how true this is. If we don’t embrace our role now, it is almost certain we will struggle in being a content, cheerful worker. Thus our home will be one of strife and discontentment.

“She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.” vs.21
Thoughtful Preparation. How are you preparing for your future?

“ She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.” vs. 22

Skills. What skills are you learning now that may benefit your husband? This doesn’t just mean home-making skills like sewing and cooking (though these are important). What about typing and computer skills? Gardening? Working with animals? Healthy Eating? Herbs and their uses? Communication skills such as writing? All these and more will prepare you for helping your Husband. You never know when a little knowledge in one area may become a big help in the future!

“She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.” vs. 24
Economic Understanding and Wise Financial Planning. While our Husbands will be the main provider and gatherer, or the “offence” in the family economy, we are going to be the “defense” by (wisely, hopefully!) using the money he brings in. A frugal, wise wife will make even a meager income go a long way. Conversely, a “spendy” wife can ruin an excellent income. Do you know how to work on a budget, if necessary? Are you educating yourself on what is happening with the economics during this financially volatile time in history? We will increase or decrease our husband’s productivity with how we use our resources. What about the resources you have now? Are you doing him good?

“She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” Vs. 26
Character defined with the fruit of the Spirit. Above all, we can do our husbands good by cultivating character.

I only highlighted the verses that stuck out to me – why don’t you go find for yourself all the other ways you can do your husband good! Always remember – the decisions we make today will do our future husbands good or evil in the future.

Miss Jessica C. enjoys many activities, but the main things include sewing, harp, photography, reading and blogging. However, with all those personal “diversions” the Lord has been teaching her, she feels that they are insignificant when compared with his work and calling as a daughter and sister. You can read more about her at Seasons of a Heart.
