Helpful Hints

Here are a few interesting kitchen helps that I thought I should share with everyone!

  • To determine whether an egg is fresh, immerse it in a cup of cool, salted water.  If it sinks, it’s fresh.  If it rises to the surface, throw it away.
  • To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.
  • Zap garlic cloves in the microwave for 15 seconds and the skins slip right off.
  • To easily remove honey from a measuring spoon, first coat the spoon with nonstick cooking spray.  This also works if the recipe says to ‘drop cookie dough by rounded teaspoons’.
  • Spray your Tupperware with non-stick cooking spray before pouring in tomato-based sauces.  No more stains!
  • Transfer your jelly to a small plastic squeeze bottle.  No more messy, sticky jars or knives!
  • Wrap celery in aluminum foil before placing it in the refrigerator it will keep for weeks!
  •  Substitute half applesauce for the vegetable oil in your baking recipes for a reduced fat content!  (Example: 1/2 cup vegetable oil = 1/4 cup applesauce + 1/4 cup oil)
  • To ripen avocados and/or bananas, enclose them in a brown paper bag with an apple for 2-3 days.
  • Brush beaten egg white over pie crust before baking to yield a beautiful, glossy finish.
  • For extremely soft cookies, place them in a closed container with a slice of bread for at least an hour.  You will need to replace the slice of bread at least once a day until the cookies are soft enough for you, then remove the bread.  You will be VERY happy with the results!

  1. Wonderful hints. The cooking spray hint on the Tupperware is one I didn’t know. Thanks.
