Making The Home: Properly Cleaning Your Bedroom

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm244/ggmstaff/Article%20Graphics/mHomeLG.png

I've always been a clean person. I could never go to a friend's house and play in a dirty room. I remember one friend in particular would get upset with me if I would just start cleaning her room, with or without her help, because I couldn't stand to sit in such clutter or filth. I felt bad that she hadn't been taught how to want to be in a clean room rather play in a dirty room because of the work. For me it was fun to be able to help clean my friends' rooms. I was able to be an example of a homekeeper and we both had the satisfactory of playing in a clean room. Usually we'd end up playing "house" and cleaning was just part of the play.

I will admit though, at times, I do not clean properly. Mother Dear keeps telling everyone that just because it's out of sight or off in the corner of a room, as an organized mess, it's not clean. Usually when I clean a room like the above mentioned it's because I'm not sure what do to with the stuff, but still that doesn't make it clean. It's not only about things being clean. It's also about good stewardship and responsibility.

When the Littles have been sent off to clean their rooms and later come down, proclaiming them to be clean, it is just to their dismay when the organized mess is pulled out from underneath beds, closets, and from corners, but it will teach them how to properly clean their rooms.

Sometimes people just need some help noticing the mess and some direction. I've found out that if you clean your room in an organized fashion it's easier to complete the task.
Properly Cleaning Your Bedroom:
1. Get everything off your bed and make it neatly. Gather all the stuff that's lying around your room (from under beds, on desks and dressers, in corners and closets) and put it in the middle of your room so you can see what you're cleaning.

2. Pick up all the clothes, clean or dirty. Put dirty clothes in a laundry hamper. Hang or fold the clean ones and then put them away.

3. Get a trashbag and pick all the trash and papers you don't need. When throwing papers away make sure you look at every one so you don't throw something important away.

4. Pick up all the toys and put them in the toybox or in whose ever room they belong to.

5. Place all your papers, letters, and notebooks in their properly place in or your desk. I have all my papers in one of my dresser drawers where I have them organized and where I can find them.

6. Return books and schoolbooks to their appointed shelves.

5. Get a wet, soapy rag and wipe down all the desktops, dressers, window sills, baseboards, and walls. Don't forget any pictures on the wall or cobwebs in the corners. It may not feel like dusting makes a big difference by when you're done you'll know it's clean. Depending on what type of floor you have, such as wood or carpet, sweep or vacuum. Use the vacuum-hose to get in the corners and from around the baseboards. You should wait a few minutes after dusting before vacuuming so the dust settles.

7. Wash your windows with a rag or papertowel.

8. Light a candle or bring in some fresh flowers for a finally touch and clean smell.

The question is "Is it clean?", and there can only be two answers. You'll find once you've thoroughly cleaned your room it's much more enjoyable and easier to find things. You'll be setting a good example for the other children in your family and will be able to help them clean and organize their rooms.
How To Keep Your Room Clean:
1. Put things back into their place when you're done and throw away trash.
Proverbs 6:6

"Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise"

You're welcome to print off the list to help keep your room clean and to remind you to be a good steward and responsible of what the Lord has blessed you with.

Ugg, Bluejane and I have searched, and searched, and searched for what we thought were "fun" ways of cleaning our room. Oh, prepare yourself for a long comment, by the way! :)

These are ways that you should NOT clean your room.

We would play with our American Girl dolls, and pretend that our room was a town or city, and that the dolls had to clean it. Well, it was a story, so we had to have a proper setting, and have events leading up to the cleaning, so that took quite a bit of time. By then, our parents had realized that we weren't cleaning, and came in to reprimand us.

Another one was, we would stand in front of Mommy, and she would say, really fast, "Go pick up eight things!" Then would race to see who could finish that order the quickest. We would do that until the room was clean.

As we got older, we tried different things. We looked in books for ways. One of them was very similar to what you said.

However, we have both realized, that it is easiest to just get in there and get it done. We play some music and set a timer. If you know when you feel most inclined to clean and organize, then do it then. For Bluejane and I, it is right before we go to bed. An odd time, but then we feel like getting more done.

Anyway, good post, because it is something that I think that a lot of people have a problem with.

Have a very bright, very cheerful day!

I'm going to read this to my 6 and 9 year old. Their rooms are constantly messy though a lot of the problem I think is there's not a method to the madness. There's no true spots each thing has a home for. It's a weakness we must work on, but this article is a good start to get towards seeing the floor again! :)

I loved this. Thank you! I am pretty tidy but I was reminded to teach my girls these skills that they can use now and someday when they have their own home.

When I was young, I never kept my room clean. It was a habit I grew out of, however, because now I love my room to be tidy, and I love to make it tidy. I agree with Miss Eyebright, I feel the strongest urge to clean right before I go to bed. Even if I'm really tired!
